A zoo is an animal park in which animals are kept in captivity, although there are many different types of zoos around the globe, including aquariums, safari parks, botanical gardens, and even theme parks. In the United Kingdom, there are approximately 300 public zoos, most of which are open to visitors throughout the year. Some zoos are private, while others are semi-private; the latter allows admission to members of the public, but requires payment for access to the grounds. There are also many free zoos, such as those found in urban areas. Zoos usually contain animals that are native to the region they are located in, and are often maintained in natural environments. They feed their animals accordingly, based on how much food they would eat in the wild. Many people enjoy visiting zoo exhibits, particularly children. However, some people find it distressing to see animals confined in cages.
